- =======================================================================
-
- Much more than a game....
-
- This Horse Racing Season never ends...and now the season continues with
- high stakes and heart pounding finishes; with superb action in a full
- color treatment of this popular simulator/game that never ends, that
- any number can play. Here's a horse racing simulation so real, it
- practically leaves hoofprints on the track. Feature rich with pleasant
- and exciting surprises. A Horse Lover's delight.....
-
- Fun and instructive for the whole family. The realistic simulator
- lends itself to analysis by other handicapping systems.
-
- Comes complete with a stable of 800+ horses who were top money
- winners of their time.....and a full program of races from 5 furlongs
- to a mile and one eighth. Fields may race from one to fifteen
- (15) thoroughbreds.
-
- This system requires a hard drive. VGA full color and Monochrome are
- supported. CGA and EGA graphics are not supported. VGA supports dynamic
- "virtual" displays.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The faster the PC the better the show.
-
- =======================================================================
- * INSTALLING *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Resident software (TSR's) should be turned off! E.g., Sidekick, ProKey
- Networks, Commander...
-
- Install and operate outside of the Windows environment. The plain
- ordinary C:> prompt is the best place to start.....
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Please make note of new "Menu Selections". These take precedence over
- those mentioned herein and in hard cover manual, et al.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- There is a real difference in DOS between "/" and "\"
-
- This system requires about 1 Megabyte of hard disc storage.
-
- Buffers will be set to 28
- Files will be set to 28
-
- If the Buffers & Files settings are not to your liking reset buffers & files
- by rebooting your system.
-
- Please make a backup copy first....and use the backup to install.
-
- For a Hard disc system:
-
- d: = any floppy drive. target drive: = hard drive
-
- Insert this diskette into a floppy drive....as follows:
-
- d:\>INSTALL {target drive:} {space} {\sub-directory}
-
- For example:
-
- d:\>INSTALL C: \RACE
- d:\>C:
- C:\>CD\RACE
- C:\RACE>TRACK
-
- The installer will establish the sub-directory.
-
- Whenever you reload a REGISTER file, meet # is reset to one (1). Erase
- *.BET, *.RCE & *.TTT files...or "Duplicate file name...." will occur. It is
- not fatal...ignore. If this is an update....you probably would like to save
- your Register. Don't overwrite!
-
- Examples of wrong install commands:
-
- d:\>INSTALL C:\HHR
- d:\>INSTALL C:\ HHR
- d:\>INSTALL C:HHR
- d:\>INSTALL A: \HHR
- C:\>A:INSTALL.......
-
- etc..............
-
- The system may be re-installed anytime. If asked to "Overwrite a file?"
- the best policy is to answer "Yes". If you want to save an old file...
- like the Horse Register and/or save time....answer "NO".
-
- If this is a downloaded file....do not install into same sub-directory.
- Target directory should be different.
-

-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * COLORS *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Default colors are:
-
- OUTLINE = White
- MASK = White
- NUMBER = Black
-
- These colors may be changed as follows:
-
- OUTLINE = HORSE
- MASK = BLANKET
- NUMBER = NUMBER
- SHIRT = Not implemented.
- CAP = Not implemented.
-
- <R>estart will set you back to default.
-
- Monochrome graphics may not be changed.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- If you change graphic modes...colors may change; and in monochrome modes
- the colors & figures may drop out. Return to the higher resolution graphic
- mode....or re-install.
-
- Note: Horses, while in the Camera mode come in only 3 colors. However, the
- blankets and numbers are accurately shown....with the numbers being bright-
- ened. Also, a number in the color black, appears as white.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 16 horses with the name "*number = DUMMY" have been supplied to accomodate
- <F>ields. Learn their id's. You may want to use them instead of using a
- valid horse....or breeding.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- For those who play by themselves.....and wish a phantom public to make bets,
- please select <F>antom public. This bet is limited to $2.00 no matter what!
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- To begin, all Horses are owned by "TRACK".
-
- There are three (3) ways to take possession of a Horse.
-
- 1) Auction
- 2) Resale
- 3) Breed
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- <CR> = <Enter> = <Carriage Return>
-
- X-acta & Trifecta bets are made in the following sequence:
-
- 1.- <CR>
- 2.- Wager
- 3.- <X> or <T>
- 4.- Post Position (or <W>) of 1st Horse <CR>
- 5.- Post Position (or <W>) of 2nd Horse <CR>
- 6.- Post Position (or <W>) of 3rd Horse <CR>
-
- Only one position may be "wheeled".
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Attention:
- 640 x 400 graphic resolution will fail on the picture demo and
- will not allow color changes. This resolution is found on AT&T
- and Olivetti PC's. However, all other functions will operate.
-
- In the VGA mode, execution of the Color change(s) will result
- in a delay of the track layout. Therefore, save your color
- changes for all at once.....if you can. Otherwise, there is no
- degradation of program performance. Speedy 386 PC's may make
- this delay transparent to the user, anyway.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Midnight:
- At midnight the system does not allow betting. Curfew...?????
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Time:
- Stop Watch times should be suspect for races run with the Jockey ON.
- Times are given in minutes:seconds:fifth's.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Some user functions have purposely been made difficult, to prevent the
- Marshall from accidently falling on the keyboard and creating a situation
- most favorable to himself/herself. For example: Capital "R" is required to
- start a race. Small "r" will not.
-
- =============================================================================
- * FIELD *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This feature will allow you to set-up a field for a race.......change a
- horse's name and sex...and rate the animal for a given distance.
-
- The use of percentages (00-128%) makes this system amenable to any other
- handicapping system that you prefer....as ratings, speed, etc. are all
- relative anyway. The advantage of this simulator is that traffic and post
- position are definitely a factor.
-
- The driver for this type race is very consistent and different from the
- algorithm driving the game.
-
- A study was performed on this algorithm by an independent agent. Their
- recommendations have resulted in an extensive enhancement, with commensurate
- improvement of this system to predict winners <hah!>.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * CLASS *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Class will change depending on a Horse's performance and experience. However,
- "ST MID STR" ratings are inherited traits and probably won't change.
-
- No change occurs if the race includes a Jockey at any time.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * GRAPHICS *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Only a given set of graphics are supported. "+" will attempt to find
- the highest resolution available in your system.
-
- If you select a non-supported graphic the system will not respond. Also
- some graphics work up to a point then go "Illegal....". Start again and
- select another. There's one there for your system.
-
- VGA is given full support and gives the best race pictures.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * CAMERA *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The camera may be toggled on and off from the main MENU. The camera may
- only be in the "off" state during "Instant Replay". Also, the StopWatch
- is meaningless, whenever the camera is turned off.
-
- The camera may be turned on / off during a race by pressing and holding
- <+> to turn on (once is not enough)........and <-> to turn off (once is
- usually enough). Patience. It may take time to take hold.
-
- WHERE ARE THEY....? While the Camera is on.....you may want to see the
- "bird's eye-view". Press <+> once....and wait.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * JOCKEY *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The jockey may be toggled on and off from the main MENU.
-
- The jockey may be turned on / off during a race by pressing and holding
- <@> to turn on......and <!> to turn off. Patience. It may take time to
- take hold.
-
- You may rate the Jockey on any given Horse. Keep in mind that a Jockey can
- only do so much for a horse. Don't expect miracles. On the other hand, a poor
- combination of "Jockey & Horse" will definitely tell in the long run.
-
- The results of a race will not be saved if the Jockey has been toggled "ON".
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * DEAD HEATS *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Dead Heats are impossible. The decision(s) of the computer is final.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * DAILY DOUBLE *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Daily Double Bets can only be made before the First Race. No provision has
- been made to pre-determine the number of entries for the 2nd Race. Therefore,
- the number of horses available for the Second Race is limited to the number
- of Horses running in the First Race. Hence, run a field in the 1st Race which
- will satisfy even the most avid player, who demands outrageous choices.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * BETTING HISTORY *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Every Bet is recorded and available for inspection after each race. Enter
- a Bettor's ID; i.e., any name or code that will be unique to that bettor...,
- or blank if you don't care. Daily Double bets are ignored in the tabulation(s).
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * CASE *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Pay attention to Upper & Lower case. In some instances, it is important.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * LBL *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Lengths behind leader at the finish is posted after every race....and appears
- with the Past Performance output.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * PACE *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- If you have a "Need for Speed".....
-
- The race is purposely slowed down to heighten anticipation. The "CapsLock"
- or "shift" key, will kick the race into high gear, if you have a 386 or 486.
- Also, the Up/Down arrows (cursors) speed-up or slow down the pace in real
- time.
-
- If the "CapsLock" key is engaged, other real time functions may be ignored.
- Also, once the finish line is up....real time options are ignored.
-
- If your PC has a "Turbo" switch.......make sure that it is in the high speed
- position.
-
- Pace control only works if your PC can run the race faster than your internal
- PC clock. If not, try switching to Monochrome Graphic Mode.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * ELIGIBILITY *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Randomly selected Horses are restricted to one race per meet. This restriction
- may be overriden with the "player selected" option; or Field option.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * PERSPECTIVE *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Consider an 8 horse field, eight abreast turning for the stretch. The horse
- that is leading is further to the right along the rail....which is exactly
- as we show it.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * TROUBLE *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- In the of event of trouble:
-
- 0.- Take the diskette(s) to another computer and see if you encounter the
- same difficulty(s).
-
- 1.- Execute a CHKDSK of all diskettes and hard drives.
-
- 2.- Check your PATH. Make sure it leads to DOS & the Root directory; e.g.,
-
- PATH=C:\DOS;C:\
-
- 3.- Your Config.sys file may require one or more of the following commands:
-
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
- BUFFERS=30
- FILES=28
- FCBS=12,12
-
- (no spaces in DOS commands)..........
-
- 4.- If your system has no printer....press <Ctrl-Break> when asked for
- "default printer / list device".....but do not terminate batch job!
-
- 5.- Lazer printers should use emulators and be compatible with Epson (fx)
- format.
-
- *.- If you make changes to your Config.sys file be sure and re-boot the
- system.
-
- *.- The CONFIG.SYS & COMMAND.COM files should be in your root directory.
-
- *.- "Out of memory....." errors occur when your system is on a Network
- or a TSR program is operating in the background. Take your PC off the
- network.....and/or shut down TSR, memory resident programs. This is
- done most often by using a separate AUTOEXEC.BAT file which does not
- turn on TSR programs and rebooting your system.
-
- *.- If your system appears "Sluggish" make a "Wager" and <C>ancel the bet.
- If it takes more than 3 seconds to flash the "No Bet" message...then
- you are most likely on a Network or a TSR program is operating in the
- background. Shut it off!
-
- *.- "Past Performance(s)" refer to races run on your computer only....and
- specific performances are available only at the close of a meet.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- * WARNING *
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- A hidden registration file is maintained linking the original purchaser to
- the diskette. Also, a hidden audit file is maintained transparent to the user,
- which leaves a trail which can be be traced back to the original user.
-
- DO NOT distribute copies of these programs. You could be held liable for the
- payment of all unauthorized copies.
